THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW / PART 4

I WILL PUT MY LAW IN THEIR INWARD PARTS

-Jeremiah 31:31-33 speaks to us concerning the purpose of the law. It states, … Behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which My covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, says the LORD: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, says the LORD, I will put My law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be My people …

-This passage of scripture gives us great insight into the purpose of the law. It tells us that the original covenant ( the law ) that God gave mankind ( Israel ) was a stepping stone to a better covenant. God knew full well that no one would be able to keep or fulfill His first covenant ( except for the Son of God ). The very purpose of the first covenant was to show man that he was inadequate in and of himself to achieve godliness. The first covenant was on the shoulders of mankind to perform that which God had commanded. The result was, is, and always will be failure. After that is established in your life ( a realization that you can not keep the law ), then the letter of the law has served its purpose, making you ready for the next step in God. The next step is to have the SPIRIT OF THE LAW WRITTEN ON YOUR HEART! This is the better covenant! This is why Jesus died. He did not come to do away with the law, BUT TO FULFILL IT!

-Colossians 2:13,14 states, … And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, has He quickened together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross; … As a result of what Jesus accomplished we are no longer held captive by the letter of the law, but we are now introduced to a better covenant. This better covenant involves God doing in us what we could not do for ourselves. GOD HAS PROMISED TO WRITE HIS LAWS IN OUR INWARD PART ( HEARTS )! This is accomplished by grace through faith. In essence, the spirit of the law is being written on our hearts. It could also be said that the spirit of the law is GOD’S DIVINE NATURE. So … We can see that we are no longer under the letter of the law, but we have made the transition into …
